No BTDT with your leaking transmission, but the CV/axle removal process is
described fairly well in the archives. Probably best to remove the axle
assembly and do the CV joint/boot stuff off the car. You don't have to
remove the strut assembly, just work the track control arm's ball joint out
of the bottom of the strut assembly and you can swing the strut assembly
aside sufficiently to extract the axle, and then undo all the bolts holding
the inner CV to the diffy. I disengaged the swaybar and used a heavy
length of steel rod laid over the track control arm and under a notch in
the sheetmetal behind the wheelwell to get the control arm separated. You
need the triple square tool (10 mm) to get the diffy bolts out. I have one
of these: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/SK-41420.html . I have
one of the cheaper four-piece sets like this:
http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/LIS-60750.html but they're a pain to
use with a socket because they keep falling out just as you get it ready to
use. You also need a long (like 20 inches) extension. Lets you put
pressure on the wrench outside the wheelwell. I had a replacement axle
(right one is different from the rest), so I have yet to deal with the
actual boot replacement. I'm planning to rebuild the axle to have it for a
spare.
