I have not had to replace any of the items you noted, but am not supprised at
them being dealer only.
On the GM plug thing, the reason they do that I think, is the firing polarity of
the plug. On a negative ground system, the electrode is positive and it is the
part that erodes fastest. Putting Platinum on the electrode slows this down.
The GM system (like most "wasted spark" systems) actually fires two plugs with
one coil. One electrode is positive, the other is negative, so one plug needs
the platinum on the center electrode, the other on the ground electrode. If you
get a plug with platinum on both, it should work fine in either place.
AFAIK, most good aftermarket plugs are built this way for this very reason.
GM just wanted to save a few pennies by making a "right" and "left" plug. I
think they have gotten over this temporary insanity.
