Geeze, sorry to hear about your issues Jack. We can all relate to dumping
money into her and then something else happens right after; when it rains it
pours! ;-)
According to the repair manual, there are only 2 codes that will cause the
car to go into limp mode, W/O causing the PRND321 segments to light up -
'Consumption Sensor' and 'No Speed'. I had a problem with 'Consumption
Sensor', which turned out to be the idle switch. Does your car seem
hurky-jerky when you take your foot off the gas when you are driving it?
Does it start out ok and then go into limp mode after driving for a block or
two? May be related to the problem I had.
At the risk of wearing out my fingers, I will copy and paste an old post of
mine:

Hey Carter, sorry to hear about the problem you have been having. I think
this one is related to the last problem you had. Under most conditions,
when the car goes into limp-home-mode, all of the segments light up orange
(PNRD321), but under other conditions they all go black, which is what you
are experiencing.
I had an issue with the idle switch (located inside of the throttle position
sensor) not seeing a 'closed' condition. When I would drive the car and take
my foot off of the gas, it didn't know that I had done so, and therefore
didn't make a correction to the fuel; it felt like I was driving a
stick-shift and wound it up, then took my foot off the gas w/o pressing in
the clutch. This caused my car to go into limp mode with the segments *not*
lit. The root cause in my case was a bent cruise control rod (happened when
the transmission shop reinstalled the transmission), combined with filthy
butterfly valves inside the throttle body.
I would recommend that you pull the codes (very easy to do) and the car will
tell you what it thinks is wrong with the engine / transmission.
Instructions can be found on Scott's website here:
http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/ecufv8.html
In my case, I was getting 2121 on the engine (idle switch) and 2243
(Consumption Signal) on the transmission.
If your problem is the same as mine (seems very likely) then it is a matter
of finding out what is hindering the throttle from returning to
all-the-way-closed. On the front of the throttle body, there is a little
'arm' that is bolted to the end of the shaft that connects to the throttle
cable at the other end. With the engine turned off, find this leaver and
lift up on it; this will simulate stepping on the gas. Now let it return to
rest and push down on it, forcing it to be 'more closed' than it is at rest.
If you hear a CLICK from the TPS, you will know that something is preventing
it from closing all the way on its own.
Hope this help,
- Jeremy

Hey all,
My 91's transmission is in limp home mode.
Here is the timeline:
April this year full rebuild on transmission to the tune of 4500 bucks.
Car has run and shifted flawlessly since.
Last Friday (week ago) car was parked (running and shifting perfect).
This Friday car goes into limp home mode.
Two things- car was parked, and driveway flooded, so a good 2-3 inches of
water where under car for at least 24 hours, and wife left pass window down
a
crack through 5 days of pretty much non-stop rain, so interior though not
soaked is pretty damp.....( I live in NH, where it appears we will never
see the
sun again, everything is flooded including a stream that runs through my
land,
and I'm thinking of building an Ark for fun)
The display is NOT lighting all the PRND321 which is supposed to happen in
limp home mode, instead the just the letters are lit with no highlight on
any
gear.
Also when starting the car, I'm getting a 5-8 second buzzing noise from
under the drivers side speaker that sounds just like a relay clicking open
and
closed very fast.....what do the collective minds think?
Selector switch moisture issues?
I'm going to blink out the fault codes later after a birthday party, and
see
what it tells me.
Has anyone got an idea of how to pull the connector apart (where is it?),
or
do you access it from above in the pass compartment? Or from below? Any BTDT
would be very appreciated!!!
Thanks in advance,
Jack
