I heartily recommend trying to use one of the valve cleaning treatments
(SeaFoam, Top End Cleaner, ...) before getting too far into an engine
tear down ...
Old #344 cleaned its act right up after a SeaFoam treatment ... I don't
remember seeing a blue cloud once afterward. Of course if you've seen
how much smoke comes out during the treatment you wonder if the total
amount put out by the engine I the same, it just gets it out of the
system at once ... ;-)
#2 seems to have cleaned up its act too, but with the new engine that is
pretty much expected ... ;-)
