[V8] Transmission refill

I've decided to go the drain-and-refill-a-few-times route with the auto in my
1990 3.6 V8. Drained out 4 litres but in the service info I have it says 3
litres for a drain/refill. So I put in just a fraction over 3 litres of
synthetic, guessing that the trans was overfilled before.
Well there is a slight delay as there always was when selecting between R and D,
shifts are as smooth as they ever were in forward gears but the big change is
that at low speeds, the trans now will kickdown into first, something I
couldn't figure out why it wouldn't do before.
Anyway, got a factory trans dipstick (thanks for the heads up on that guys!) but
have checked it now twice: it's barely registering any fluid on the dipstick.
Checked it both times after driving the car for 1/2 hour, shifted between
reverse/drive, shifted to park, engine running while checking dipstick.
What am I missing here? Any suggestions? Obvious one is to put in more fluid,
another is to check dipstick length (now where did I see that in the V8
archives...) but I did order the part after finding the number on my 'family
album' and bought it from a trusted source.
I have read it here that this transmission is sensitive to over/underfilling and
right now it seems it has had a dose of both...
Thanks guys,
Phil in Oz
