There is a tool which allows you to do the job with the strut on the car - but
you still have to remove the sway bar, lower control arm, tie rod, and axle. At
this point, you are I think 4 nuts away from just removing the whole strut - at
which point you can just bring it to a machine shop and have it done right. You
would also be able to replace the shock accordian boot if needed, and even the
shock without any special tools. I believe in either case you still need to do
an alignment.
