[V8] Need some audi expertise

So a friend of mine who's a long time VW fanatic but never owned an audi
(but was instrumental in convincing me to buy my V8.) has an opportunity to
buy an audi from a friend of his boss.

It's an 87.5 Audi 4000 quattro, has the 2.3l and is black on black leather,
and only 80k miles.  It's a one owner car with all records as well.

He's being told that this car in black/black with the 2.3l is quite rare (I
guess a 2.2l was standard?), but the guy is only asking $1200 for the car...

Like the saying goes, if it's too good to be true, it usually is...  so is
this a good deal and he should jump on it, or is it going to be a money pit
for him?
