[V8] Testing RPM Sensor

Eric,
All your car should need for spark is the timing and reference signals (or only one-Keith, anyone?). It doesn't rely on the Hall sender, or any others that I'm aware of. So, it sounds like you are right on the money with the reference sensor. I'd probably check the resistance of the sensors to make sure, as they aren't cheap. About $150 each, last time I checked. They are also both identical in function, so you can substitute one for the other. You can also use ones off a 5000 turbo if you know anyone with one for parts. They rarely go bad on those, because they are a good distance from any significant heat. Just make sure when you unplug them on your car, you keep them straight which one goes to which plug. The plugs are shaped the same, and are very hard to see in the factory location.

Also, not mentioned in the article, it helps a LOT to pull the drivers side distributor. Pull the plug wires, unscrew two 8mm screws for the cap, and undo the two 10mm screws for the distributor. Don't worry about timing, it only goes in one way. Remembering where the rotor was pointed only makes the job a bit easier. Not necessary, though.

BTW, I just checked on bimmeraone.com, and they have the RPM speed sensor for the 1988 5000 TQ for $82.

Hope this helps,
Tony Hoffman

  Thanks for the help guys!

I pulled the codes, and it was giving me the code for the RPM sensor (2111), however my car will not start and according to the documentation that I have (http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_shooting/ecufv8.html#fcthree) sometimes when the car will not start and you pull codes 2111 will come up. Does anyone out there have any experience with this?

I have not had any hot start issues with the car, but I have only owned the car for a couple of weeks now. What else could cause my problem? I am missing spark from both sides of the engine.

  Thanks again for the help!
  ~Eric
