I was looking at Autoweek on line this morning, and read through the article
about the new Audi R8 super car.
Yesterday, I took the 928 out of the garage and drove it the five miles to
the car wash to wash off the winter's garage grime....
Man! Is that Audi Supercar thingy UGLY. It may be "super", it may be very,
very fast, and very very expensive, but looking at my 928 in the sunshine,
and then looking at Ingolstadt's latest fugly iteration of an automobile,
I'll keep the 928.
Audi is now two for two in the past month. There is the Q7, which is big,
ugly and expensive, and then there is the R8 which is coming, and which is
all of that.
My '91 20 Valve Avant is handsome...from a distance of about twenty feet
when you can't see all the bumps and bruises from its 150,000 miles, and the
V8 is an extremely handsome, if totally unpretentious looking car,
especially when freshly painted and spruced up with 16" wheels. And of
course, the Porsche 928 in the S4 and later variants is beautiful: the
lines flow from front to rear, and only the rear spoiler sort of marrs the
profile....
But now, we seem to be getting cars out of Germany that are trying awfully
hard to be Japanese-looking. The only word that I can think of to describe
them is the old Japanese word: FUGLY. (At least I think it was a Japanese
word....)
