Hey everyone,

I'm about to list my '91 5 speed V8Q on eBay. ...for parts :-(

Heads are VERY recently rebuilt. Tranny is good but shifts a little hard.
90% of the body is good. Timing belt recent. interior is so-so.

I just wanted to give the list first dibs. Email or call if you want
details. (would like to get $1200)

(There... I did it. If you'll excuse me, I think I'll find a quiet place to
sulk now...)

Could someone straighten me out and tell me how I should be bleeding the
brakes on my 1990 V8 with UFO's.

I had to replace the brake pads at all four corners.....which for my
purposes meant removing the rear calipers and temporarily disconnecting the
brake hoses from the calipers. So I had to bleed the brakes. I proceeded
in the same manner I have many times before on other cars without the
assistance of a vacuum pump tool, but with the help of someone depressing
and subsequently releasing the brake pedal on my command while I opened or
closed the brake caliper bleeder valve nipples in the order of farthest
wheel from the master cylinder to the closest. The end result appears to be
satisfactory but it would be nice to do without as much brake pedal
sponginess as is possible. Does any V8 owner actually have a truly firm
brake pedal???

My question to anyone is should I be employing a different technique? If
so, how, and why?

This is the first car I've owned with ABS and I'm not certain that some
special technique is not required.

As an aside, the brake fluid was not filthy and the pistons, 'sliding pins',
and e-brake levers were all moving quite nicely.........always a good thing.

Anyone out there have a kit to part with to upgrade to even more beefy
brakes than the UFO's (Porche?).....without breaking the bank?

Thanks,

Gunter

I've used a Motive single person brake bleeder for years like this:

https://secure7.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?
CS=bimmerworl&BusType=BtoC&Count1=694027125&Count2=611167550&ProductID=4
8&Target=products.asp

I've never had much success with vacuum-type bleeders. Otherwise,
just do like you normally would (bleed from furthest caliper to
closest). Extremely easy. I don't have spongy brakes on either of
the running V8's. Of course, if you want even better pedal feel,
think about upgrading to stainless lines and check the condition of
all of your brake lines while you're at it. I've found bubbles at
the rears on a few occasions with oem rubber lines. Disaster waiting
to happen.

Can't comment on brake upgrades right now except to say that I've
always been very impressed by the stopping power of the UFO's. Can't
be beat except for the Porsche Big Reds and similar.

Audi's shop manuals call for pressure bleeding of brake systems. I use an
Eezibleed (scroll down the page here:
http://www.rdent.com/pages/tools.html ) with about 15 pounds of air
pressure. No need to touch the brake pedal. I flush the systems annually
during the changeover from winter tires to summer tires on the four Audis
we drive to reduce the liklihood of moisture corroding the calipers. The
problem with pumping up the brake pedal to bleed the system is that you
frequently get master cylinder piston travel outside the normal range seen
while operating the car. This can result in the piston seals being exposed
to rough spots in the cylinder, probably caused by corrosion, so the seals
stop sealing and the brakes get funky. You also want to change really old
brake hoses (I'm doing mine now every five years unless there's signs of
earlier deterioration like cracks in the rubber). If the hoses can bulge
any, that's reducing your braking power. And a hose that can bulge might
burst.

Fellow Audifnas,
I have just discovered a broken front H&R spring on my
'91 V8. I am disgusted. My car failed inspection
because of it. I can't believe the spring actually
broke! They are only about four years old. My
brother, who has a '93 V8 disovered a broken H&R
spring on his car six months ago. It took forever for
H&R to get him one. Whats up with these pieces of
crap?!! They obviously can't withstand the load of
the heavy V8. Anyone else have this problem? Any
suggestions? Alternative springs? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

Oh swell. Now I have to go check mine.

Carter posted recently about his OE spring breaking, so it may be
inherent in the car rather than the spring. I wonder if these are all
UFO cars or are they converted? My '91 was converted at new to G60
setup, and I replaced the original OE springs several months ago -- at
217k miles.

Lemme guess -- it broke under the plastic sleeve, right?

I have no experience with H&R springs, but that's the failure mode
I've heard of...

It's 14 mm.

There are several ways to beat the price RD charges. The page some lister
had at apexcone.com has disappeared, along with its pretty photos, but
Chris Miller's website has several descriptions for build-yer-own pressure
bleeder rigs: http://members.aol.com/c1j1miller/brake.html#Brake bleeding

Seems to work best for me, too -- I'll be in High Point, NC from next Monday
through the 4th or 5th on business anyway...
