[V8] back on the road: sounds from the engine bay

My V8 sounds like 1) a diesel at idle - lots of valvetrain slop, I always assumed, and 2) a Ford with a bad steering pump, which the high pitch whine seems to be coming from somewhere in the front of the motor.  I figured when I had the motor out, before it went back in I would do a major overhaul.  Then that has me thinking - perhaps I should just wait for a lower mile A8 motor :-(
   
  Anyone want a more or less complete 4.2?
