It's the "webasto" option. When the dollar was high and the grey market
was booming, many a Benz etc. made it over the pond with the Webasto
still attached. Ambulances and other emergency vehicles in very cold
climates are all equipped with them, so the vehicle is ready to go in sub
zero temps. I don't think they've ever been approved for installation in
passenger vehicles in the US.
Porsche was offering a gasoline heater option around 1965 or '66, not too
many mechanics were inclined to attempt repairs on it and most owners
opted for removal.
