[V8] failing abs?

I agree but for the utility of a wagon body. And of course, I must admit
that the modified ECU in my car, along with the turbo charger waste gate
spring which I think was probably designed for Charles Atlas, makes the
Black Mariah sooooo much like my V8 that I almost don't miss it.
Now that the alternator has died, it looks like the car is going back to the
shop late next week for another bout of hospitalization. I want to take the
car on a business trip to Canada late this month, and may have to make it a
big marathon, including a trip down to Massachusetts as well, so I guess
there is nothing for it, but to have the wrench render his tender mercies on
it.
Sometime I must total up the total of all bills that this car has incurred.
It is really not as bad as I sometimes think, considering that I have a
totally new air conditioning system, as well as all the underside work and
so on. Yet I sometimes think that it might be interesting, knowing what I
now know, to find a really good '91 body and start anew. The object being
to end up with a perfect, '91 20valve Avant. My car is really not good
enough to do a complete restoration, I don't think...but then, maybe it is.
For now I will settle for a functioning alternator and a nonhumming sound
from the rear. Oh, and I do want to make my radio make noise that is
intelligible.
Roger
P.S. Oh, yes. This car has Bridgestone G009's on it, which I put on last
summer. I do NOT recommend these tires for the Type 44 cars. We have a set
on my '94 100CS Avant and they are really pretty good. But for some reason
on my '91 Avant, they seem to squirm a bit more than I like. They're ok,
but only that.

Hmm. Well, having had a sort of 'Blue Mariah' in the Lago variety, I just
had to come back to the V8 fold a few years back and have no desire to
leave. I'm addicted to V8s and should likely go through one of those twelve
step programs for it, but I don't have a problem -- really ;-)
A boosted engine is fun and is certainly more fuel efficient at highway
speeds, but the solid, vault-like build of the V8 is really special and I
smile every time I start mine up and when I let it stretch its legs. That
humming certainly sounds like a wheel bearing to me as well -- and
alternator failure and wheel bearings are just as likely in the 200q20v as
in the V8.
I've been back in Michigan for a few days and will be leaving tonight for
Vegas to continue my journey in the '93 V8 to Steamboat Springs, CO and the
Bridgestone Ice Driving track there before coming home. Will give a full
report from my journey's beginning with able tour guide Jeremy Ward's
introduction of Northern part of Oregon's West Coast.
Best,
Ingo

That's what I am trying not to think about.
Then today in the rain, as I was turning a corner in a deep puddle, my
alternator light came on to stay. I turned around and went home, but the
battery shows a steady discharge, so I guess the alternator is going to have
to be overhauled. What will probably happen is that the car will go back to
the wrench for all of this.
Right now, I am beginning to weary of the more or less constant picking at
me by the Black Mariah. In between niggling problems, the car runs
beautifully, but maybe, just maybe it shouldn't be "saved" much further.

I wonder if the hum you are talking about isn't a bearing?
