Yes, you have to remove the face plate to get at these springs. To remove the face plate you need a very small allen head, it's in the 1mm to 2mm range, that I ordered through Wiha tools. (Kudos to Dave Head for providing that information some time back.) The trick to doing it is that once you get the face plate unscrewed you just disconnect the flat ribbon cable that runs from the face plate to the radio. You can then easily disassemble the back of the face plate and replace the springs. To get the ribbon cable plugged back in you just have to pry off the bottom plate of the radio which gives you access to a slot right where the ribbon cable slides into the connector. I use a set of needle nose pliers to gently hold the cable by it's edges and slide it into the connector. I've done this on 3 of these radios now and can do the spring swap in 10 minutes. I think it's the one thing I'm competent to do on this car...:-)
