[V8] Hint of Fuel Smell

Yes, and newer cars have much lower system pressure than the old CIS cars ... I'm pretty sure the nominal fuel pressure is only something like 40PSI. I don't think there's that much worry about bursting. (Now that I'm thinking about it I'm reminded that rubber brake lines are exposed to much greater pressures than a fuel system sees!) My biggest concern is having rubber lines exposed under the car. I don't know how practical this is here, but there was a leaking metal coolant line on a car I was working on. Rather than buy a new line I fitted a length of rubber hose that spanned the leaking area and put hose clamps on either side. The metal line was still in place, but it would not leak because of the rubber over it. I'm pretty sure the car is still running fine with this kluge.

All this said ... this is just speculation about damaged under-body lines. IME it is far and away more likely that the problem is that there's a leak in the flex lines that connect to the fuel rails ...
