Believe it or not John, I experienced the exact problem you are describing
with a little bit more detail. My main issue was sitting at stop lights as
well as trying to park. The #1 solenoid in the Valve Body of the
transmission went bad on my car. What it did was allow the Torque Converter
to Lock at Idle or at very low load. This caused the engine to bog and die.

The #1 Solenoid, I believe is the only one that is accessable on the bottom
of the valve body when you remove the transmission oil pan. I believe Keith
or Dad, (Dave Head), could confirm this.

I actually had my Valve Body Rebuild at the time, and was told that the
problem was that solenoid, but he did a full rebuild anyways. After the
rebuild, my shifts were much quicker and solid. If you already have the
x-pipe off, the transmission pan removed, you might as well find a ZF
rebuilder in your area or talk to Keith and see where to send it to.

The only hard part about removing the valve body is knowing the right Bolts
to remove... Again, I beilve there are others on the list (including dad)
that have the ZF manual and can quote part numbers and removal instructions
for you.

I still have the overall details of what I did with my V8, but the small
intricate details are beginning to escape me (2 years later). I've since
moved on and become addicted to A4 1.8t's...

Sincerely,
Shawn Head
