[V8] Speaking of battery charging...

This alt was rebuilt by a bosch place one year ago, after the same symptoms occured. Car was driven somewhat infrequently since, and I replaced the battery at the same time (w/ incorrect A8 battery).
So now I am doing some prelim checking, but expect to find a bad volt reg or brushes.
>From the alt there is a brown wire (ground) and a red wire, both going to a black cylindrical thing mounted to the r/f frame rail. That cylinder also has a hole next to where the wires go into it. Can anyone enlighten me as to what this piece is? The wire diagram makes no reference to it. I presume the VR is behind the alt cover...
Thanks all!

Have you already bought a replacement alternator?
If not, and if you were me, you would remove the alternator and bring it to a
shop that does rebuilds on these things. They will be able to get you back up
and running for under $100 - and that is with a new regulator and bearings - and
of course assuming the rotor/diodes/windings are all OK. Most likely they will
also use better quality parts.
As far as I know, this is the same alternator used in most/all Audis of this
size and vintage. There may be some case differences but the guts are pretty
available.
Remember even the Audi 100 had all of the same electrical goodies as the V8 -
and therfore had to have a similarly rated alternator.
