[V8] Speaking of battery charging...

Unless the A8 battery was a huge amount bigger in amperage capacity, I doubt
that had anything to do with this. A bigger battery needs a bigger alternator,
but the V8 already takes a pretty good sized battery. You would have had to move
up to a diesel sized battery to cause a problem I would say.

After the speil on quality and good parts, bla bla bla, it is always possible
that something has failed - for whatever reason. If you can get the alternator
out and have it tested, you eliminate that variable. You can do an OK job of
testing in the car, but to really ring it out you need to let the Bosch guy have
another look at it. (I assume they have a good off-vehicle tester)

The cylinder thing is probably (as in 99.98%) a noise suppression capacitor. If
it was shorted you would probably only see a black spot where it used to be. You
can take it off for testing purposes and probably will not notice any ill
effects but you might get some alternator whine in the radio. The only other
thing it could be is a huge diode - also for noise suppression, but I doubt it
is. I have looked at mine, but it was long enough ago that I can not positively
remember.
