I saw this car appear on Autotrader and wrote to find out the asking price.
I am not going to buy a green with tan car, but the mileage was intriguing.
I had a subscription to Carfax when I did this, and what I learned finished
my interest: a car purchased at auction with low miles and no service
history or documentation. And for an outrageous price: someone at the
dealership read the Kelly Blue Book and thought the numbers given there were
real.
The truth is that this car is a $5000 car IF the body is truly straight. It
will take a complete service, beginning with the timing belt, tensioner and
all that jazz, just to begin with.
The power steering pump will have to be replaced, and a complete ignition
tuneup will need to be done in entirety...that means all wires as well as
the obvious.
AND since we would be "in there", all the cam and crank seals will need to
be done, because if they are not, they will all start to leak within the
first year of ownership.
The entire rear and front suspensions will need to be redone. I mean to say
that all the bushings that age on these cars will need to be done as well.
That is what the rear tire wear is telling me, anyway.
I think that if the body is really straight, for around ten grand this
could be a fine car. Five for purchase, and then around five more for the
necessary maintenance that most likely has not been done, but at 75000 miles
will be definitely needed.
