I too have a persistent leak in this area.  I have changed the
gasket Kneale refers to.  I recently steam cleaned the engine and
watched for the source of the leak and I tend agree with Jason.  My
leak occurs higher than the mentioned cover and lower than the valve
cover.  This leaves the front cover or the head gasket.  My leak
pools oil on the checkered area of the block just below the head and
above the side cover.  I believe that oil laying in this area
confirms that the leak originates above the side cover.

Anyone ever experience a failure of the gasket between the block and
that fixture into which the oil temp sender, switch, pressure device
and filter all screw?  That cover has half a dozen screws holding it
in place.  Could any of those be loose?
