I don't know about the V8s, but the Type 44s have a check valve
in the fuel line to keep up the fuel pressure at the injectors. If
the valve fails, fuel leaks back into the tank, requiring longer
cranking time to refill the lines. My understanding (on the I5s) is
that the check valve is part of or near the fuel pump (which you
just replaced).
Also, if the o-rings on the injectors are old, they will also let
fuel leak out, prolonging cranking.
Things are fine when the engine is warm, since the fuel hasn't
had much time to leak down.
