... last time I bought one it was in the US$40-60 range. I used to get them from TPC ... RIP ... I think the last one I got was from sjmautotechnik.
While I acknowledge that this is a fairly simple fix that is very easy to do, I would not go off and change it unless I was getting codes that indicated that the ECU was having difficulty controlling the mixture (i.e. lean or rich limit exceeded).
What is the problem you are trying to solve? The engine idle drops while in gear? For that, have you verified that the tranny isn't the culprit? How about the ISV? Are you trying to fix the surge you reported? OK, this might well be a FPR. Are you trying to fix the exhaust smell? Did it smell like fuel? Earlier you reported it smelled like oil or something other than fuel ... if that is indeed the case the FPR is not a suspect.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but you will very likely do yourself the most good by getting ProDiag or VAGCOM and logging what the engine is doing while you are experiencing the misbehavior. Could your engine coolant sensor be telling the ECU that the engine is cold? A few of those 10 parameters that the ECU logs can really help inform you as to what is going on inside the engine. I'm also a firm believer in reading spark plugs ...
