[V8] Ghost in the Speedometer?

The contacts on the inst cluster need to be cleaned for starters, common
problem.  Search the archives, you will find volumes on removal of the
cluster, the stuff to use to clean, etc.  Mine has been doing this
sporadically for a year or so  now, have been putting off performing
this procedure, however it's only a matter of time.

The audifans.com search function has been under the weather.
To search the site, use www.google.com, and enter the site name along
with the search text. Don't forget to enclose phrases in quotes. For
example:

site:www.audifans.com v8 "hard starting"

Yesterday while driving to work, I looked at the speedometer and, for
about 
three seconds, it instantly dropped from 60 MPH to 0 MPG, then, after

three seconds, instantly went back to 60 MPH.   

(OK, maybe it was 70 MPH).

This is the only time I have observed this happening in the life of the
car.  
Any thoughts what may have caused this?
