I was thinking it could be fuel pressure regulator syndrome, which would be
one of the possibilities you first surmised... hydrolock, but with fuel.
You said it was cold, well you said something about 2 inches of snow, so I
assumed cold weather, and it sounded like it had just completed a trip to
the store, which I assume was a short trip. If the car wasn't warmed fully
and the outside temperature was relatively cold, could it have been the same
relative situation as when the fpr dumps fuel in the the cylinder(s)?
Later, it would have had time to clear and then able to start.
It may be a bit of a stretch. Depending on how much it was driven after it
did refire, you might find some evidence by pulling the dipstick, if it was
a fuel flooding issue.
