The reservoir is held in by 2 rubber grommets,  if the grommets are
marginal, or you put in too much pressure, reservoir will empty itself at
the point of least resistance...the grommets, fluid all over the place.  

I believe this thread was referring to bleeding with air pressure @ the
reservoir cap.

I would recommend biting the bullet and getting the correct fitting,
they're made of machined aluminum and come with an air chuck built in. 
Best when used with an air tank (vs directly to compressor line), that
way you have much more control over bleed pressure via the air tank
valve.
