John,

I contacted the guy in NC too.. He told me the same thing it needs a
rack, but won't come out of park because of some hydraulic issue.. The
two systems are not connected, which leads me to believe that there is
more wrong when either he's saying or he knows. If your looking to part
the car out..then that another story, for the $700 he's asking, if you
could pick it up for 3-5 hundred then move it to a place where you can
dismantle it...the wheels alone are worth it.. I wish I was closer or
I'd consider it.. if it runs..do the autocheck if it comes back "OK'
then at least the engine is in ok shape.. the trim and accessories are
where the $ will be..

I have a question about the rack & pinion. This may seem like a dumb
question to you V8 guys... it sounds strange to me, but I'm a 5 cyl guy,
haven't been around a V8!

Someone near me has a 1990 V8 for sale, says it needs a rack & pinion,
and goes on to say something about it can't be driven because the rack
is somehow connected to the auto trans. That sounds strange to me, that
there
is actually a hydraulic connection between the steering and the tranny.
So
I'm coming to the experts.............you V8 guys...for an answer.

I appreciate it...................trying to decide whether to check out
the car more...or stay with my 5 cylinder quattro's!

thanks much
