... are both cars the same model year? At least here in the USA the 1991 model cars have different software in the tranny controller. In fact I think Audi had a program to update the code in the older cars if the customer complained. The box is mounted in the driver's footwell ... on the LHD cars anyway ... you could always compare notes on the boxes in the different cars ... or even swap them to see if that's the reason why.
The automatic cars do have a kickdown switch (electrical) at the throttle pedal ... and from what I've read here they do fail.
I'll delete the other stuff ... don't want to rile the catians ... ;-)
