...and this is why the factory procedure specifies to un-plug the reserve power
supply.

Please find and follow the procedure in the Bently. I can not remember the order
of operations offhand, but the basic procedure is remove battery power, unplug
reserve, remove air bag. The order of power removal matters. Read the manual for
the correct procedure. Also note that if you turn on the key with the air bag
removed (and battery connected obviously) you will turn on the red air bag light
- and need a VAG-COM or some such to turn it off. (BTDT)

Observe anti-static rules - meaning wear a ground strap or keep one hand
touching bare metal. The steering shaft works fine for this.
Don't touch the connector on the air bag or the wires to it without making sure
you have grounded yourself to the car body and the actual ground if you step out
of the car. Have you ever been "zapped" as you got in or out of a car?
This is enough to set off the air bag.
Remember to again ground yourself to the air bag when you pick it up to
re-install.

It is worth it to take these easy extra steps - it would suck to have that thing
go off on you.
