216/60 15 = 25.15dia 5.07in rim to ground -0- 3.89 gear ratio
255/35 18 = 25.02dia 3.51in rim to ground 3.91 effective gear ratio
255/40 18 = 26.03dia 4.01in rim to ground 3.76 effective gear ratio
255/40 17 = 25.03dia 4.01in rim to ground 3.91 effective gear ratio
225/50 16 = 24.85dia 4.43in rim to ground 3.94 effective gear ratio
The 18-40's would make a slower car, the 18-35's is getting close to the
ground for a 4000lb car... I found even the 255/40 17 cost about 2mpg highway
and were slower off the line. I'd look at lightweight 17's as my first
choice, then a lightweight 16 setup as second.

Scott, your concern is the same as mine -- both unsprung weight and
susceptibility to damage. Plus the car's lowered w/ H&Rs, and the ride
would certainly be more harsh w/ 18s. I have essentially no clearance
issues w/ the 17x8s as is, and if I do go 18s, will keep overall tire
diameter as close as possible to the 215/60-15 OE size. The weight IS a
killer though.
