Brian..
Completely subjective. The 1500 you're putting in it now, what will that
do for you? Where will that get the car to? What will be left to "fix"?
IMO even if you put 3000 into it, and then "only" have to do regular
stuff to her for the next couple of years, you're ahead of the game. To
put that into perspective, that's about a 100/mth with no interest, and
where are you going to find a car as nice as a V8 for that? Granted it's
gonna suck for gas, but that's part of the price you pay for having what
you got.
Even still say worst case you have to put 6K into it, that's still only
~250/mth over two years and then your payment free again.
Even if you did need to rebuild the engine at some point in the future,
depending on what your specific plans are for you and the car, you may
just opt to get another 3.6 for it and keep her going like that, a used
V8 is fairly cheap, then again get the used engine now, and work on it
while there's time, so when you're ready for it it's just a swap..and
that won't hurt too much ;-)
If you're looking for a return type number.. stop now.. the one side of
your brain is about to rumble with the other. Any money that you're
putting into the car is only for "you", and to keep it from becoming
parts for the rest of us. The cars certainly have their own following,
but are really only worth what people are willing to pay for them and
unless the car is *perfect*, don't expect that to be much, certainly not
what it's worth to you or I, or what it would cost to replace with a
comparable vehicle.
For me my plan is have one daily driver, and one "fun" car, and one
parts car, that way when something breaks I have a "replacement" or if I
need to take one off the road for a longer term type repair, I can drive
the other car. Currently "my" plan is working just perfect.
