[V8] Flat Crank V8Q

The process is known as "Twist Forging" and it is well documented that that
is how the V8 cranks were made. The story I had heard on the DTM cars was
that they weren't twisted back to flat, but they just had a little *extra*
stroke twisted into them. So, when BMW and MBenz protested the Audi V8 and
won, it was because they were displacing more than than the production car
at the time.

Sorry for the late reply (digging my way out of unread-emails).

The word I have is that all V8Q cranks started out flat and were bent while
hot; IIRC, there is something about this process that leads to a more stable
crank.

In 1990 and 1991, Audi took these cranks and bent them back to flat for the
DTM.  Audi was Stuck and Biela dominated the DTM despite the weight
penalties, and BMW and Mercedes were looking for a way to get them
disqualified; they complained that this process violated the rules and won.
Audi completed the 1991 season (for which Biela was the point leader), but
the 1992 V8 DTM cars which were in production were halted.

NOTE: if someone knows this story better than I do, please chime in with the
details.

Simon in Australia had a 1992 DTM for sale (that was never able to compete),
but it look like it may have been sold as it is no longer on the qsz
webpage.


I still wonder if it is possible to create a flat crank from one of ours and
pair it with some hot VW cams...

Didn't Audi profess to have a way to modify a V8 crank making it a flat
crank?
