Glad you're making some progress.  Your machinist is correct about the
oil scraper rings, but nothing is free, as he said, the alternate design
will wear the cylinders quicker.  BMW found this out the hard way in
their early V8 engines.

Just hope your parts lady doesn't find the memo about you having to pay
shipping charges if it's not in country.  Even my parts guy didn't know
about this little tidbit until Audi told him to charge me $45 red label
shipping from Germany for some $6 tabs.  Worked out alright though, he
ended up giving me a discount on the total order equal to the shipping
costs.  This was several years ago, and even then he was saying that the
V8Q customer priority program was being phased out. 

Did you order the bolts with the VW part number or the Audi part number? 
Just curious to know if there was a price difference.
