[V8] How to use the transmission dipstick 20:)?=

The transmission dipstick is different from the oil dipstick, so you can't use the latter for checking transmission level.

Procedure for its use is to operate the car until it is at total normal operating temperature, park on a level spot with the engine at idle and check with the transmission dipstick.

A dry transmission holds 10 quarts, but you never can drain all the fluid out. If you open the pan drain, it's supposed to take four quarts to replace whatever comes out. If you're removing the pan to get to the filter, I'd start by opening the drain first and then seeing if you can how much more oil you lose after you drop the pan. I'd think that after replacing the pan, you could begin with adding four quarts and then using the transmission dipstick to check whether you need more after the warmup. The service manual calls for "Dexron ATF". I have done the drain/refill four times with a gallon of Dexron III on both our V8s.

You might check with Robert Bentley Co. http://www.bentleypublishers.com/ about the V8 manual on CD.

The '92 V8 does have an oil dipstick. What exactly is the procedure for checking the transmission oil level?

I only know the procedure for "normal" cars (level, warm oil, engine running, oil between min. and max.), but the V8 is something for itself.. :)

Sometimes the level appears over max, other times the stick is dry, so I guess I'm doing something wrong..

What is the oil capacity when changing oil and filter? A generic Dexron III-oil is just fine, I presume?

I once had the V8 repair manual on a CD, but it's gone.. :( Is there a way to get another copy?

Lots of questions, but I haven't been close to a V8 for a few years now, I hope you forgive me! ;)
