To second that:
I towed a 4000 lb loaded boat behind a chipped 3300lb 5000TQ. I never
exceeded 55mph for 24 hours of driving. The travel speed was not set by the
power of the car. It was in concern for handling and braking. Not saying I'd
recommend that, though.;-)
Generally speaking, a good rule of thumb is never exceed 75% of the towing
vehicles weight if you are towing for a significant distance at highway
speed. That rule is for a trailer with brakes, BTW. As has been mentioned,
braking is by far the biggest concern. Even with trailer brakes, drive very
carefully till you get a feel for the "new" stopping distances. That way,
you always will have plenty of reaction distance.
