So, the little old lady who didn't know what she had sold her V8 for $5700
needing a timing belt.
Hmmmmm. Well, I think I have another spin on that tale.
I suspect that the little old lady had already found out what the timing
belt service was going to cost and did a little research. Here is how it
went:
Little old Lady, after dialing the number to her banker: "Hello, John?
This is Mrs Little Old Lady. I need some information about my car. You see
it is my husband's car and he really loved it, but since he couldn't see to
drive for the past six years, the thing has just sat in the garage mostly.
I only drove it on Sundays to church, and the thing gets me there so fast
that I have to sit through two services...it gets me there in time for the
early service, and I really only like to go to the late one.
Anyway, I took it to the Audi dealer where that nice young man behind the
service desk told me that the car really needed a service and it would have
to have its chastity belt replaced. What? Well, I thought he said
"chastity" belt, but maybe that was what my daughter told me that my
granddaughter needed, and it was really some other sort of belt.
Anyway, it is going to cost over a thousand dollars to replace the belt and
maybe even more. The nice young man said that sometimes when these cars get
to be this old, they need some other things...something about weeping seals
for the crankcams or something, and then there is the hydraulic waterpump
that causes the steering to be racked...it all sounded terribly expensive to
me. So I think I need to sell the car, and wondered if you could tell me
what you think it is worth?"
"Oh, you have a book that can do that? Uh,huh, uh huh, uh huh, REALLY. You
mean this old car is worth all that money? Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh. I see.
Well, ok, I think I'll put an ad in the newspaper and see if there is anyone
who will pay that. The dealer told me if I trade the car in it will be worth
about $3,000 toward the new TT that I really think I would like to have, so
if I can find someone who doesn't know anything about Audis, maybe that
person will pay $5700 for it.
And that is what your bankers book value for the car is?
Uh huh, uh huh, uh huh, well, OK John. I'll do that. And thank you very
much, and yes, I will stop in tomorrow to renew the five million dollars in
CD's that need to roll over....."
Seems to me a friend of mine down there told me something about this little
old lady who is flying around in a bright, "lose your license" RED Audi
TT....
