I'm going over in my mind the top end work I'm planning, and was thinking about doing the rings (and bearings if needed) while the heads were off. I'd leave the  block in the car and not touch the crank (that stuff will rot your brain).

If the
cylinders are within wear limits, just clean them up with a chemical
cleaner and call it good. If they are out of wear limits, well - you are
hosed unless you want to find a qualified shop to refurbish the block. It
can be done but you may as well just buy a new A8. It will probably be
cheaper and easier.

Are you replacing the rings?

I
would start talking to pashamad. He helped me get my motor rebuilt and it
seems to be running great. His method - and the one I used - was to leave
the crank in place, just replace the rings, and re-use the old rod
bearings. Of course everything was measured and verified to be in spec.
(bearings and bores)

For that matter - he just listed a rebuilt
motor here a few days ago from a wrecked car. That might just be the easy
fix for you - unless you are a glutton for Audi punishment like I am
:-)
