Above is a good write-up with pics, below is from an email I sent a long
while back describing how I did it:

using a wire coathanger and some wire cutters/pliers clip the hanger like a
sideways L using the long straight portion of the hanger so it looks like
this:

|___________

then using the pliers, bend the right end up so a 1/8" long 'hook' is made,
I bent mine past 90 degrees to counter it un-bending when I pull on it.
which leaves something like this:

|___________,

using the left end as a handle, you'll insert the hook end into a hole in
the grill aiming for the top corners of the radiator. try to keep the wire
as close to parallel with the bumper as you can to prevent slipping, as
you're trying to pull sideways not forward.

Now here a flashlight helps, you want to look about 4" directly behind the
top corner of the headlight, you'll see the latch spring rod. It will be
running front to rear, and you may be able to see the hood pin behind it.
This rod is the spring that the hood cable pulls on. You'll want to try to
slide your new hook tool under it with it turned sideways, once the hook is
behind it, turn 90 degrees so the hook is behind the rod, and gently pull on
it (it will take some force, but pulling too hard will straighten out your
hook-tool.) Use your free hand to lift on the hood once the lock pin is
loose. I shoved a rolled up rag under it to keep it from re-latching, then
repeated the other side.

It may take a couple tries, but I was able to get my first latch in about 3
minutes, the second, less than a minute.
