The bottom cover should be fairly easily removed with the steering wheel in
place.
I've found some of the column switches route the wiring for the cruise
control in a way that guarantees failure ... unless you never use your turn
signals. If you look where the stalk meets the base you'll see a small
diameter wiring loom that wraps around to the back of the switch and another
connector ... this is the CC wiring. When I install the replacement switch
I make sure the wiring loom moves freely and doesn't get bent or pulled as
the turn signals are activated. I don't know why this design seems so prone
to failure, there are plenty of older Audis which have the CC on the same
stalk with no problem of damaging the wires. Of course there are many other
possible failures for CC failure. I haven't checked the KB lately, maybe
the CC troubleshooting entry has been fixed. I think I put in my tuppence
relating to the V8.

wiring diagram in my 4 binder audi manual set....Took the top part of
cover off @ combination switch, but couldn't get connector off
(without removing bottom that seems to want the steering wheel
removed????). I also realized that the cruise control(that I rarely
use) has also quit working(fuse is good)Just wondering if there's any
other possibilities that I'm missing/more accessable connector before
I remove the switch.
