Ford used to be a customer of mine in the early 1990s. The factory I
called on was the one where a lot of the EEC-IV Engine Controller Software
was written (Colo Springs). One of the programmers was also a gear head -
and had that SHO. He had custom EEC-IV software and a turbo on his - I
forget now what the horse power specifics were, but I know that I visited
4 times a year, and he was usually rebuilding his transmission. When it
ran though, it was a rocket ship. A friend of mine still has his 89
SHO.
These guys also told me that the then new turbo diesel
(Navistar) was capable of 800 HP with just a software change. In fact, the
same motor went into heavy equipment. They had to work hard to detune it
enough to make the rest of the drivetrain last through the warranty
period.
Other little tidbits -
Fords were (and probably
still are) built to carry a 100K mile warranty but it is un-likely we will
ever see it.
The EEC-V (current generation) engine controllers
were supposed to record the crank angle after you shut off the motor and
it stopped spinning so that it could start faster. On the older systems
the starter had to spin the crank two revolutions before it could figure
out how to fire the injectors and even then it had to guess on the
ignition for some motors.
And Kent -
I can hardly afford
my own soul, but one of these days we will both have an S4!
I
just hope it is before gas is $52 a gallon and the earths average temp is
below 140 :-)
