If I follow your description correctly, it sounds like a bad solenoid.
When you turn the key to start, does the starter solenoid engage (loud click),
and stay engaged? That would be a very positive indicator of bad contacts in the
solenoid. If it chatters then that indicates more of a battery or cable or
connection problem - but that does not seem to be the case for you.
I don't know what the options are for rebuilds - but if it were me I would tear
down the starter and if it is in rebuildable shape, I would replace the drive
gear, brushes, solenoid, and anything else possible like bearings.
Or just get a rebuilt unit, but I usually would rather rebuild my own just
because I know what I am starting with and can control the quality of the job.
