Mine quit smoking, apparently with all these new no smoking laws. The v8
has kicked its habit. Kinda nice.

Have you done a compression test?  My 3.6 did the same thing, rebuilt
the heads, and still did it. One cylinder had its rings going away,
which is what I attributed the problem to.  It also puffed a bit after
idling at a stop light then accelerating a tad hard away. It wasn't any
better or worse after 50k milles, and power was good (by PT standards). 

There's a certain procedure to comp tests that, I believe, requires the
motor to be warm -- though I got about the same relative readings either
way. 

If you find a weak cylinder, don't sweat it -- like I said, it never
worsened over a good amount of time. 

I post this simply because you may get input regarding guides and seals,
which can also have that effect.
