Mark, in addition to the stock radio (Delta) you can use all the way up
to the Gamma CC (Circa 1995 A6), and it will plug in to the stock
harness and retain the communication between the dash and the radio. So
that should help in expanding your search for a "stock" replacement. I
have seen the Gamma CC's on EBay for as low as 30.00 (It's where I got
mine). 

The Delta units were good, but over time and allot of use, the buttons
would fail, If you're looking to replace it with something that *Could*
have been in the car I's choose the Gamma CC it's a better unit.
