Don't feel bad, I actually paid to have a monkey lad do this
last year. Back in Jan or Feb, I forget which, of last year it
was time to do an oil change and it was just to damn cold and I
was just to lazy to do it myself, so I dropped it off in the
morning at the local garage that specializes in MBs, BMWs, and
Audis, and had them change it. Picked it up that night, drove to
work next morning and when I was leaving work at the end of the
day I noticed a fresh oil stain under the car about the size of
a small plate. I said WTF, I'm getting very good at saying that
with the V8, and took a look underneath and see that the oil pan
is awash with oil. Checked the oil level and it's down about a 2
qts. Bought some oil, topped it off and drove back to monkey lad
land. They put it up on a lift checked it out, tightened the
filter, drove it around and it still leaked. At this point they
decide it must be a defective filter, so they pull it off,
install another filter, and test drive it. It still leaks. They
pull it in again, pull the filter and take a real good look at
the filter housing and see that there are not one rubber gasket,
but two rubber gaskets jammed in there. In addition there is
still a gasket on the filter that they had just tried to
install. So it appears that you can get a seal with 2 gaskets if
they are seated properly, but with three it won't seal. I must
have drove around for about two months with a dual gasket oil
filter. At least they didn't charge me for the filter change,
and I'm back to changing my own oil.
