[V8] Timing marks on cams?

When I did the TB on V8#2, I found it was way off from when the
"Professionals" did it previously. I couldn't get the alignment keepers to
go on if the TDC mark was lined up with the pointer on the crank pulley, so
I had to take the covers off the cams and then move the cams until the dots
lined up oposite eachother. This required nudging the crank a bit, move
the cams a bit, nudge the crank, etc. until I got them aligned. Then I put
the fixtures in place, pulled the timing belt and moved the crank back till
piston #1 was at TDC and the pointer was on the mark. After replacing all
the other parts of the system and getting the belt back on, the engine ran
smoother and felt more powerful than before the TB job.

Subject: [V8] Timing marks on cams?

A while ago someone pointed out to me that there is a way to line up the
cams to TDC without the TB in place and without the alignment tools. I
believe they were refering to the dots on the chain sprockets.

Anyhow, I'm hoping to find out what the procedure is. I do have the manual,
so reference to pics will help as well.
