You may also have a mechanical problem - the brush that was worn so badly
had to wear for a reason. Take a look at the slip rings. This means
pulling the alternator but you need to clean up the slip rings anyway. Use
steel wool to polish them up - but remember that you have to get all the
steel fibers out or you will release all the smoke from the alternator
:-)
