[V8] 93 v8 climate control, a/c turns itself on

Is this supposed to happen?

Last night driving home from work the outside temp was moderately
warm, but a bit muggy due to some weather in the area, conditions
somewhat different than usual here.  My car had been parked in the
parking garage all day so it was cool enough that I didn't punch the
snowflake.  I had the temp set at 69 and manually adjusted the fan to
just below the middle.  The a/c came on by itself 3 times on the way
home.  I didn't notice it immediately any of the 3 times so I don't
know what the driving conditions were then.

I read the manual, but didn't see anything about this.  Is there a
feature that turns on the compressor automatically for any reason?
