[V8] Starter Question

This is what it sounds like to me, as I had the same problem about 3 years
ago - boy do I remember that squeeeeel. There are some hardened 'dowels'
in the actual bendix - this is what lets the starter pinion turn one way
but not the other, so that it doesn't 'stick' to the flywheel when you let
go of the key. Over time these 'dowels' wear and will cause what you are
hearing. I tried and tried to source a bendix with no success - the only
ones I could find were off of a VW - and the stupid thing was backwards
because they put the starter on the transmission side! Anyway, I did fix
mine by cutting the protective cover off of the bendix, cutting hardend
steel dowels to fit, and re-welding the cover back on. Worked like a
champ for 20k until I wrecked the car - I still have that starter if I
ever need it! It took me along time to figure this out because off of the
car the starter seems to work fine - plus the bendix seems to work in your
hand properly - it just fails under load. You may have other issues but
with what you said in your post - I would feel 95% certain that this is
your problem. BTW, it will get worse over time to the point where the car
used to start after a few tries - then it won't start at all - trust me.

                Jason
