[V8] Here is a stupid question....

...and I am sure someone knows the answer. The reason it is so stupid, is
that I should know the answer myself, but try as I might, I just can't
remember. It is about a 200 20Valve, which is not what this list is about,
but I know that there is information here because there are Sicko's on this
list like me, with V8 AND 20Valve experience. Here it is:

Is there supposed to be a belly pan underneath the engine on the 200
20valve?

I have had four type 44 Avants at this point, and I cannot remember for the
life of me if any of them had a belly pan. I wasn't paying attention to the
first one, which was a front wheel drive 5000S that my wife (of the moment)
and I bought new in 1985. I simply don't remember about the first, second
or this Quattro.

The reason I need to know this now, is that I think I just toasted my
alternator. Now the alternator is new, and we are having a wicked late
season Nor'easter, which has turned into a pounding rain. With the snow that
we got last night there are huge puddles everywhere, and I hit was at low
warp, heard a squreeeach briefly, and when I got to the office fifteen miles
later, I lost all electrics and finally the car died. I left it there and
came home in the big Chebbie 1-ton.

Damn! I hate it when this happens. The alternator is new...maybe 1 1/2
years old and not more.

And no, I am NOT being punished by the Audi Gods. I made the decision to
continue the restoration project that is The Black Mariah, at least to
include the obvious mechanical needs for the next year or so, and her life
with me has been extended to at least $215,000 miles, or 35,000 miles more
than I have now.

So, belly pan? If she is supposed to have one, then I must source one from
a yard someplace, because maybe my alternator wouldn't have died....oh,
well.

Roger

P.S. Anyone else seen the '94 V8 that is on Autotrader? Rusty body! How
does that happen. Cheap price, which makes me wonder if it is possible to
restore it, or if the rust is too far gone....a '94!
