[V8] Cams -- again

I'll share My info. I have been talking to a cam regrind in regards to
the most the 3.6L engine and early 4.2L engine can take. The biggest
hindrance to a huge cam in the PT/ABH is the lack of cam lobe
clearance. If you can get the head machined for larger lobes your
golden, but otherwise your in trouble. IIRC the largest lobe was 10mm
of lift with stock base circles. You can run a hair more, but your in
tight clearances and you could have contact if something gets loose. I
am working with my source on some truly radical cams in 276/272 duration
(intake/exhaust) that will fit the stock head. The issue then is that
the cam will be ground so much I'll be through the heat treated portion
so I'll need a nitrate cycle to harden them back to spec. The price on
this is not known yet as I have to figure out if new valves are needed
or I can get away with adding some stem cap shims to raise the lifter
back up. You can grind ~1mm off the base circle of the cam before the
hydraulic lifters are out of range and you get gaps which means you
don't get the cams lift or duration numbers.
The biggest thing with regrinds is the starting point about 255 is the
most you can get out of the stock PT intake cam. You can get to ~265 on
the exhaust, but why bother with a large exhaust in these motors? The
276 cams I am working on are going to use stock PT blanks and have the
base circles cut to remove weight and material. The draw back is the
need for longer valves or to shim the lifters up to get them in the
range of working. I am not saying it's a good mild cam for those
running stock ecu's as it will require a chip tune min as you'll flow
allot more air. I'll keep those interested informed. If interested
please reply to spcole at mn.rr.com.
