Very illuminating post as the V8's have a pretty bad rap radiator wise.
Patient = 56,000 example with original rad. (probably partially plugged)
The dash will show temp straight up and no aux fan action. get under the
car and shoot the top/middle/bottom of rad with laser temp after noting the
rad outlet hose is warm but easily handled temp wise. upper and core rad
temps 180F and lower outlet ~90F, therefore never getting temp switch to
temp.
All that said this is sitting and under way car does not get that hot. I
think I "need" a rad. (also assume this doesn't help mileage. Any BTDT?

Amen.
All three V8Q's, the 90Q and 200TQ have been running the evil green in
the cooling systems since before I bought them. With the green stuff for
14+ years now, V8Q #1 still has the original radiator, hoses and heater
core, no abnormal aluminum wear & tear, and the sky has not fallen AFAIK.
